Indianapolis, Ind. - LMU standout Bobby Burling was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy during today's Major League Soccer's 2007 SuperDraft. Burling was a fourth round pick in the draft, and is the second Lion to be drafted by the Galaxy. Arturo Torres was selected by the Galaxy after the 2002 season, and was the first overall pick by Chivas USA in 2005 expansion draft.
"It is a great honor to be drafted. The opportunity to have a chance to play with the best franchise in the MLS and have the chance to play for a great coaching staff with Frank Yallop and Paul Bravo and the chance to learn from and play with players like Landon Donovan and now, David Beckham is a dream come true. I was really excited to hear my name called by the Galaxy because this is really where I wanted to play," Burling said about joining the Galaxy, who signed Beckham yesterday.
Burling, who completed his degree in Business Marketing in December of 2006 and graduated in 3.5 years, had an illustrious career at LMU. He was named NSCAA All-Far West second team in 2006, his second time being honored as a All-Far West pick as he was named to the third team in 2004.
This season, he was named the LMU MVP at the team banquet. The Monument, Colo. native led the Lions to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003 and 2004. He was named First Team All-WCC in 2006, and earned honorable mention honors in 2003 and 2005.
Burling finished his four years in second place on the career assists list with 18. He led the Lions in scoring in 2006 despite playing defense for most of the season, finishing the season with four goals and five assists, with two goals and four assists coming in WCC games. He scored twice, including the game-winner, in LMU's 3-2 win at San Diego, and also added goals against Rhode Island and Marquette. He finishes his career ranked in the top six of the LMU career record books for goals, assists and points.
