LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Midfielder Armando Melendez was drafted by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the third round of today's MLS Supplemental Draft. Melendez is the third Lion to be drafted by the Galaxy, following in the footsteps of Arturo Torres and Matt Kovar.
Melendez earned second team All-WCC honors for the second straight year this season. The senior captain was third on the team in points with 13, finishing with four goals and five assists. Three of his goals this year came on penalty kicks, and two of those PKs were game-winning goals. He graduates LMU in 4th place on the career assist list with 16, and 5th on the points list at 40.
Melendez contiues LMU's tradition of sending players to the professional ranks. Kovar was drafted last year by the Galaxy in the second round pick of the supplemental draft, and Torres was selected by the Galaxy after the 2002 season. He was the first overall pick by Chivas USA in the 2004 fall expansion draft. In addition, former Lions Kevin Novak and Shaun Kalnasy were with MLS teams last season.
