Lions Picked to Finish Second
July 29, 2005 LOS ANGELES, CA - The LMU men's soccer team was picked to finish second in the WCC in the conference coaches' preseason poll, released today. The Lions finished second in the conference in 2004, and qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year. LMU received two first place votes in the poll, and finished just two points behind Santa Clara.
The Lions return 10 starters and 16 letterwinners from the 2004 squad that finished 11-8-3 overall and 8-3-1. LMU advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the third year in a row, and returns a squad with experience, depth and talent. All-WCC Second Team players Armando Melendez, Diego Barrera and Nick Blanco return for the Lions and should help to create a powerful offense.
Santa Clara was picked to win the conference, and 2004 WCC Champions San Francisco were picked third. San Diego was picked fourth, while Portland was picked to finish fifth. Saint Mary's and Gonzaga round out the preseason poll.
The Lions open their season against Illinois-Chicago at the UC Irvine Tournament on Saturday, September 3rd at 5pm.
