LOS ANGELES - Matt Tutton has joined the LMU men's soccer coaching staff as a volunteer assistant coach, Head Coach Paul Krumpe announced Friday. Tutton returns to the South Bay after two seasons at Saint Louis University.

"Matt brings head coaching experience and Division 1 assistant coaching expertise to our volunteer coaching position," Krumpe said. "His club ties are invaluable to our program as the Lions move forward in our quest for a WCC championship."

Throughout the last two seasons, the California native was heavily involved in all aspects of the nationally-ranked Billiken soccer program, including recruiting. Tutton is a familiar face for many Lions, having served as club coach at Pateadores SC, coaching current LMU players Tyler Krumpe, Steffen Canty, and Jonas Reiter.

Tutton's recruiting work at Saint Louis included a 12-member recruiting class that was ranked among the top 10 in the country by Soccer America. On the field, Tutton helped the Billikens reach the NCAA Tournament in each of his first two seasons. He coached 10 players who would earn National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region honors and four who were taken in the Major League Soccer draft.

"I am excited to be coming home to Southern California and grateful for the opportunity given to me by Coach Krumpe and LMU," Tutton said. "I am looking forward to working with the players and getting the season started."

Prior to joining the Billikens, Tutton, a native of Newport Beach, Calif., was head coach at Santiago Canyon College in 2006. Before that, he served as women's soccer head coach at Orange Coast College. There, he helped the Pirates to a 24-12-7 record and two playoff appearances in as many seasons. In 2005, the Orange Empire named Tutton Co-Coach of the Year.

His first collegiate coaching position was at Irvine Valley College, where he was an assistant from 2000 to 2003. Tutton was a member of the coaching staff that produced the 2003 state championship team, which was awarded the No. 1 ranking by the NSCAA.

In addition to his collegiate coaching duties, Tutton served as head coach of the Boys' U16-U19 Pateadores Soccer Club, based in Mission Viejo, Calif. His 2005 U-19 squad claimed the U.S. Club Soccer national championship. Additionally, he was part of a staff that coached Chance Meyers and Maurice Edu, who were the No. 1 draft picks in the MLS SuperDraft in 2007 and 2008, respectively.

Tutton graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from Cal. State Fullerton in 1999 and earned a master's degree in physical education from Azusa Pacific University in 2004. He also owns an NCSAA premier license in addition to a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) B License.

In addition to his duties with LMU, Tutton has returned to Pateadores as the age-group coordinator and Under-18 academy head coach.

The Lions also have added the services of Brett Sarsfield as Director of Soccer Operations/Video Coordinator.
