LOS ANGELES - LMU senior forward Rafael Baca has been named to the College Soccer News Preseason All-American Third Team, the publication announced Monday. A two-time First Team All-WCC selection, Baca is the only player from the West Coast Conference to be included in this season's College Soccer News honors list.
Baca (Lawndale, Calif.) enters his senior season as one of the top offensive players in the nation. Last year, he led the Lions with nine goals and 23 points, both new career-highs and was the first LMU player ever to be considered for the Hermann Award for the country's best collegiate player. A team co-captain, Baca helped lead LMU to a 10-9-2 overall record in 2009, reaching 10 victories for the fifth time in school history and returning to the NCAA postseason for the first time since 2004. In doing so, he became just the third Lion to be a First Team All-WCC selection twice in his career. He was second in the league in both goals and points while gaining the WCC Player of the Week accolade for September 15-21 and the WCC Player of the Month award for September. He averaged more than a point a game in conference play, scoring four goals with four assists for 12 points in 11 games.
Baca has been named to the NSCAA All-West Region team in each of the past two seasons and was one of 38 candidates last year for the Soccer News Net College Player of the Year award in addition to winning Goal.com First Team All-American honors. He is sixth all-time at LMU with 16 career goals and 43 career points.
