LOS ANGELES, Calif. - For the second time in three years, an LMU men's soccer player has been named on the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy Watch List. Senior Roger Downes is one of 42 players named to the 2011 watch list, as announced by the Missouri Athletic Club this week.
The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. The recipients are selected by head coaches of NCAA Division I programs who are members of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Downes joins Rafael Baca in earning Watch List honors the last three seasons.
Downes is one of just five players from the west coast on the 2011 list, and one of just two from the West Coast Conference. Downes was named 2011 Preseason All-WCC earlier this week as he is one of nine returning starters for the 19th-ranked Lions.
He began his career earning 2008 WCC Freshman of the Year honors, second-team All-WCC honors and third-team Freshman All-American honors. His sophomore season he missed nine games due to injury after starting the season a preseason All-WCC selection.
He responded in a big way once healthy his junior season. He played all 20 games and went on to earn Third-Team NSCAA All-West Region, WCC Defender of the Year, and First-Team All-WCC honors while leading the team in minutes played with 1,798.
The Lions begin the season Aug. 27 at home against Sacramento State at 2 p.m.
