Santa Clara University is the favorite to capture the 2016 West Coast Conference men’s soccer crown in what should be a wide-open title race according the conference’s eight head coaches. Four of the eight teams, including LMU, received at least one first-place vote for the third time in the last four seasons.

The Broncos earned four first-place votes to be named the preseason favorite with 45 points after a 5-1-1 conference record last season. Defending co-regular season champion San Diego and San Francisco were tied for second in the preseason poll with 38 points each. The Toreros also picked up two first-place votes.

Loyola Marymount, led by 19th-year head coach Paul Krumpe, was surveyed to finish fourth with one first-place vote and 34 points while Saint Mary’s earned the final first-place vote for the second consecutive season, finishing fifth in the preseason poll with 27 points. Meanwhile, Portland (21 points), Gonzaga (13 points) and Pacific (8 points) round out the balloting.

All eight programs placed at least one student-athlete on the 11-member preseason All-West Coast Conference Team. Saint Mary’s, San Francisco and Santa Clara were each represented with two student-athletes on the squad.

The Lions were represented on the preseason All-WCC team by junior forward Alvaro Madrigal. Madrigal led LMU in goals (8), assists (5) and points (21) as a sophomore en route to earning All-WCC first team and NSCAA All-Far West Region third team honors.

The preseason poll and All-WCC team were selected solely by a vote of the conference's eight head coaches.

All eight West Coast Conference teams open the 2016 campaign Friday, August 26, with LMU beginning its ledger at Colgate. Prior to the official start of the year, LMU will play an exhibition match at Cal Poly on Sunday, August 21.
