LOS ANGELES - The 50th season for LMU men's soccer officially kicks off this weekend with the Lions set to defend their 2013 West Coast Conference title and make a run in the NCAA Tournament. They will test their mettle from day one, opening the season with a cross country trip to Durham, N.C. for the John Rennie/Nike Invitational. LMU plays host Duke on Friday, Aug. 29 at 4:30 p.m. (PT) followed by a meeting with Elon on Sunday, Aug. 31 at 9:00 a.m. (PT).
"For the first time since I've been here I have my eyes set a little further than just winning the conference," said Krumpe. "We've got probably one of the top 10 defenses in the country, our goalkeeping is phenomenal, we've got some really creative midfielders and some ridiculous pace up top."
The Lions enter the week ranked No. 22 in the Week One national poll released by TopDrawerSoccer.com. The Blue Devils come in at No. 24 on that list after finishing the 2013 season with an 8-6-5 overall record and 3-3-5 finish in the ACC. Duke was the preseason pick to finish fourth in the Coastal Division of the ACC.
Elon went 15-5-3 last fall en route to its third straight Southern Conference tournament title and third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Phoenix advanced to the second round of the national tournament for the first time in school history and ended the year ranked at No. 22 in the final NSCAA poll. The Phoenix were picked to finish fourth in this year's CAA preseason poll.
The 2014 Lions boast 19 returners from last year's squad which went 13-4-3 overall and 9-2-1 in WCC play on their way to their second league title and first outright. Head Coach Paul Krumpe earned his second career WCC Coach of the Year honor along the way and enters his 17th season at the helm of the program with a 145-114-37 record.
