Upset Bid Falls Short Against #4 UCSB
Facing their highest ranked opponent since a 2009 match-up against the same program, the LMU men's soccer team took #4 UC Santa Barbara to the wire, but a late Gaucho goal spoiled the potential upset bid in a 2-1 LMU loss Sunday at Sullivan Field.

LOS ANGELES - The LMU men's soccer team closes out the non-conference portion of its schedule on the road Sunday, traveling to face the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at Meredith Field in Harder Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

INSIDE THE LIONS
The Lions have had a strong start to the season, carrying a 4-1-1 record into the week ... They went 1-0-1 at home last week, including a huge 4-0 shutout of Sacramento State ... Junior midfielder Juan De Rada had three goals in the two games, earning himself West Coast Conference Player of the Week honors ... Junior midfielder John McFarlin had four assists in the two games, bringing his season total to six ... In games played through Sept. 22, McFarlin is tied tie for No. 1 nationally in assists per game and is third in total assists ... In goal, Paul Blanchette is third in the nation in goals against average (0.281), having given up just one goal in four games (320 minutes) ... De Rada leads LMU with three goals, but the Lions have really spread the wealth as eight different players have scored at least once through six games.

INSIDE THE MATCH-UP: UC Santa Barbara
UCSB enters the week with a 4-3-0 record ... The Gauchos host Stanford on Friday night before taking on LMU Sunday ... Two players have three goals apiece and four total players have scored this season ... Since the 1981 season, LMU is 9-11-0 against the Gauchos ... The Lions won eight straight over UCSB from 1996-05, but the Gauchos have won three of the last four meetings, including a 2-1 final at Sullivan Field last fall.
