Lions Host WCC Rivals Gonzaga, Portland
Men's soccer returns to Sullivan Field to host WCC rivals Gonzaga and Portland this weekend.

LOS ANGELES - The LMU men's soccer team returns home to Sullivan Field this week with a mission to earn its first West Coast Conference win of the season. The Lions host Gonzaga on Friday, Oct. 5, followed by Portland on Sunday, Oct. 7. Both games kick off at 3 p.m.

It's "Pink Week" at LMU Athletics and the Lions' men's soccer team in joining women's soccer and volleyball in supporting cancer awareness at a home event this week. LMU's Sunday match versus Portland has been dubbed their Cancer Awareness Game. Sponsored by the West Coast Conference, all fans in attendance will receive pink WCC headbands.
LIONS' LAST LINE
The Lions opened West Coast Conference play on the road last week, earning a 2-2- draw at 2011 league champ Saint Mary's before dropping a tight 1-0 decision at Santa Clara... Ryan Felix and Mitch Boland each scored their first goal of the season in the Lions' draw against the Gaels... LMU scored early in each half of the match, but a Saint Mary's goal in the 86th minute tied the score and neither team was able to produce a third goal through 20 minutes of overtime play... At Santa Clara, a Bronco goal in the 51st minute was the only scoring on the day despite 10 shots by LMU and 15 by SCU...
INSIDE THE LIONS
Freshman Pedro Velazquez and sophomore Craig Nitti have each scored twice for LMU, including one game-winning goal apiece... Eric Brunter, Mitch Boland and Ryan Felix have all also scored once while Sean Sears and Jack McCracken have each supplied one assist... In goal, redshirt junior Billy Thompson earned the start in the first three games, making 10 saves and posting a 1.55 GAA... Vince Paldino earned his first start of the year against Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 7), picking up the win while making three saves... Paul Blanchette made his first collegiate appearance at the end of the CSUF game, and then earned his first start against Tulsa... The freshman has now appeared in the last seven games, making 30 saves and holding a 1.38 GAA... The Lions have been outscored 14-7 overall in their 10 matches thus far... The 2-2 tie at Saint Mary's marked the second time LMU has scored multiple goals in a match, having also done so at Satnford... LMU has also been held scoreless five times... The 31-member side features 12 freshmen, 12 sophomores, four juniors and three seniors... Twenty-two different players have earned at least one start through eight games... Mitch Boland is the only player to start all 10 games... Head Coach Paul Krumpe is in his 15th year at the helm of the Lion program... The Lions were picked to finish fourth in the 2012 WCC Preseason Poll... LMU went 7-12-1 overall and 5-6-1 in the WCC, good for fifth place, in 2011...
HEAD-TO-HEAD VS. THE BULLDOGS
The Lions are 13-14-1 all-time against Gonzaga... LMU has won four of the last five meetings and holds an 8-5-1 home record over the Bulldogs... Last season, Gonzaga claimed a 3-2 overtime victory at home before the Lions clinched a big 4-1 win at Sullivan Field to even the season series...
THE GONZAGA BULLDOGS
Gonzaga is 4-5-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in the West Coast Conference... The Bulldogs closed out non-conference play with back-to-back wins, but most recently fell 4-1 to Portland and 2-1 to San Francisco... Eight Bulldogs have found the back of the net, led by Clark Phillips with three goals... Phillips also has a pair of assists for a team-high eight points... Ryan Cabellero and Chris Lowrimore have split time in goal for Gonzaga... The two have combined for a 1.94 GAA, 30 saves and one shutout...
HEAD-TO-HEAD VS. THE PILOTS
The Lions are 10-20-2 all-time against Portland... LMU won four straight matches dating back to the 2009 season before the Pilots forced a split in the season series last fall... The Lions kicked off a five-game unbeaten streak with a 3-2 win at Portland... The Pilots then went on to snap that streak with a 3-1 win over LMU at Sullivan Field...
THE PORTLAND PILOTS
Portland enters the week at 4-4-1 overall and 2-0-0 in West Coast Conference play... The two league wins have come over Gonzaga, 4-1, and San Francisco, 1-0... The Pilots stand atop the conference standings along with Santa Clara... The Pilots play at San Diego Friday before making the trip to LMU on Sunday... Steven Evans has produced the bulk of Portland's offense, with a league-best eight goals... Five additional Pilots have scored on the year... In goal, Justin Baarts has started all nine matches, making 38 saves to go along with a pair of shutouts and a 1.98 GAA...
