Torres Scores Twice and Earns Player of the Week Nods
Oct. 14, 2002 Los Angeles, CA (Oct. 14) -- Big games call for a team's top player to step it up, and senior Arturo Torres was up to the challenge for the Loyola Marymount University men's soccer team in their 3-2 double overtime win against San Diego on Oct. 13. LMU's all-time leader in goals and points netted two goals in the eighth-ranked Lions victory over 12th-ranked San Diego in a key West Coast Conference match-up. The result was his first WCC Player of the Week honor of the season. He shares the honor this week with Portland's Alejandro Salazar, who also had two goals in a double overtime win in conference play. Torres scored at the 21:44 mark of the first half to tie the score at 1-1. Despite playing the majority of the second half with his chin split open during the hard-fought contest, Torres would score at the 55:12 mark to give the Lions a brief 2-1 lead. With the pair of goals, Torres now has seven on the season to lead the team and moves his career goal total to 45, which moves him in a tie for eighth all-time in the WCC. The Lions will travel to San Diego State on Wednesday, Oct. 16 before hosting Portland on Oct. 20 at 3 p.m.
