Blanchette Named Co-Goalkeeper of the Year, Six Honored

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Paul Blanchette was named Co-Goalkeeper of the Year to lead six total Lions honored as the West Coast Conference unveiled its 2015 Men’s Soccer All-WCC awards.

Alvaro Madrigal was named to the All-WCC First Team, Blanchette and John McFarlin earned Second Team honors and Cruz Corral and Cole Souza were named to the Honorable Mention squad. The Lions also placed two on the WCC All-Freshman Team including Souza and John Bovill.

The Goalkeeper of the Year honor is the second in Blanchette’s career. The senior also won the award outright in 2013 when the Lions went 13-4-3 overall and 9-2-1 in WCC play. This fall, Blanchette earned a 9-6-0 record in goal, posting an LMU record eight shutouts along the way. He made 59 saves and tallied a 1.06 goals against average while also moving the LMU career record in shutouts to 19.

 

 

Madrigal was the Lions top goal scorer, assist man and point-getter. He finished his sophomore season with eight goals, five assists and 21 points.

McFarlin, a redshirt senior, takes home his fourth All-WCC honor after being a two-time Honorable Mention selection and one time First Team pick. The central midfielder recorded one goal and one assist this fall.

Corral, a sophomore, came on strong late in the year, finishing with four goals and one assist for nine points. All four go his goals came during WCC play, including two game-winners.

Rookie Cole Souza was one of four Lions to start every match this year. He also led the team in minutes played as a key member of the back line that posted eight shutouts. He also contributed one goal - a game-winner - against Portland.

Bovill, a redshirt freshman, scored one goal and added three assists in his first season with the Lions.
