Jan. 27, 2013
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A weekend trip to Iowa proved to be fruitless for the Lions as they fell to host Iowa, 6-1, for their second defeat in the state in consecutive days. Senior Nicholas Bjerke and freshman Cristobal Rivera gained the only points of the weekend for LMU (0-3). Iowa (1-1) picked up its first victory of the season at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
The Hawkeye won the opening doubles round with twin 8-5 victories. Dunn and Swank defeated junior Sebastian Bustamante and sophomore Todd Volmari on court one. Freshman Cristobal Rivera and junior Daniel Simko fell on court three to wrap up the point for Iowa.
In singles, Bjerke gained the first point for the Lions on court one. The senior defeated Iowa’s Hagan in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Volmari lost to J. Estensorro in the first singles match to finish 6-1, 6-0. Bustamante fell 6-1, 6-4 to Swank. Dunn defeated sophomore Felix Van Kann 6-4, 7-5, to wrap up the match for the Hawkeyes. Sophomore Othar Kordsachia was beaten by Dierckx 6-3, 6-2. Rivera came back to defeat Patrick 6-7, 7-6. 10-5 for the Lions’ other point.
The schedule does not get any easier for the Lions as they travel to national powerhouse USC next Sunday, Feb. 3 at 10:00 a.m.
