Lions Sweep Two Matches at UNLV

LMU posted 4-0 victories over UNLV and New Mexico State

Playing a pair of matches at UNLV on Friday, the LMU men’s tennis team (3-1) posted two 4-0 victories over the Rebels and New Mexico State.

“We got a couple good wins for the boys on the road,” head coach Tom Lloyd said. “We need to continue to improve and challenge ourselves even more on a daily basis in practice. We will enjoy the two wins, but we recognize there is still lots of room to improve.”

LMU opened the day with a hard-fought victory over UNLV, taking the doubles point by way of a victory on court two to break a tie after splitting the first and third courts. Gabriel Diaz Freire and Nick Borchenko earned the deciding match, knocking off Ruben Alberts/Jordan Sauer, 6-4.

While three courts went unfinished following back-and-forth matches on courts two, four and six, the Lions looked strong on the remaining three courts, with Diaz Freire, Lukas Moenter and Charles Boyce posting victories. Playing at the top of the order, Diaz Freire defeated Alexandr Cozbinov, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Moenter knocked off Eric Samuelsson, 6-2, 6-3, on court three, and Boyce bested Richard Solberg, 6-3, 6-2 on court five.

It was much of the same in the second match of the day, as LMU captured the doubles point and then went on to win three singles matches to sweep New Mexico State. The route to the doubles decision proved a bit swifter in the afternoon match, as Boyce/Moenter defeated Goncalves/Flores, 6-3, before Borchenko/Diaz Freire topped Stijn de Haan/Benitez, 7-6 (5) on court two.

Diaz Freire made it a perfect day of competition in singles, defeating de Haan, 6-1, 6-4, at the top of the order. Smith and Borchenko also recorded singles wins, as Smith topped Enrique Asmar, 6-3, 6-1, and Borchenko outlasted Mauri Benitez, 7-5, 6-3, on court five.

With the wins, Diaz Freire and Smith have now won three straight singles matches, while Boyce and Borchenko sit at two consecutive triumphs. On the double side, Borchenko/Diaz Freire are now 5-2 overall and have won three straight decisions.

Having won three straight matches, LMU will now prepare for a February 10 match at Arizona State. First serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
