Los Angeles, Calif. - With his early season singles run on the line, junior Matt Phillips pushed Wisconsin's Lachezar Kasarov to a tough three sets, including a tiebreaker, but could not pull out the win Friday at the LMU Tennis Center. Phillips fell at the No. 4 spot, while the Lions dropped the dual home opener 7-0.
"Wisconsin proved to be too tough for us today," Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "We lost a very close doubles point that could have gone either way, and we had a difficult time recovering after that."
Phillips and doubles partner Mike Wojnarowicz battled Wisconsin's Jeremy Sonkin and Kasarov at the No. 1 spot. The Lions were just two points away from taking the match, but could not hold on for the win.
Nico Terrien and Mike Chan also had several match points at the No. 3 spot before falling 8-7.
The matched, which was the home opener for LMU tennis, also marked the return of Terrien. Terrien did not compete last week due to an injured ankle. "Nico really didn't play that well, but it was nice to see him back on the court after being out the past two weeks," DeVore said. "He competed hard, but just couldn't find his game."
The Lions continue play Saturday when they open West Coast Conference action in San Diego. LMU will play San Francisco Saturday before taking on the 37th-ranked host Toreros on Sunday.
"Wisconsin proved to be too deep - winning in straight sets at every singles position except at No. 4," DeVore said. "A couple of our guys competed well today, but overall I wasn't pleased with our effort. We will need to play a lot better if we are to bring home victories over USF or San Diego this weekend."
