Finishing play at the ASU Invitational on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz., the LMU men's tennis team (4-2) recorded a 4-1 victory over Fresno State (7-4) from the Whiteman Tennis Center. With the victory, LMU split two matches this weekend.
"This was a good weekend for this team," head coach Tom Lloyd said. "We came out firing against ASU, snagging the doubles point. Then in singles, ASU played the bigger points better than us."
LMU impressed across the board on Saturday morning, winning the doubles point before capturing three of the four finished courts in singles.
Nick Borchenko and Gabriel Diaz Freire continued to excel in doubles, recording a 6-4 victory to hand LMU the advantage in the doubles pairings. Although Fresno State would win at the top court to even the doubles, Errol Smith and Diego Nava combined to win a nail-biting match on court three, 7-6 (6) to steal the team point in doubles.
Borchenko, who went 4-0 overall on the weekend, kept the momentum moving in singles, shifting up a slot and posting a 6-4, 6-2 win over Cagatay Soke at the #5 spot.
"I was very proud of Borchenko this weekend," Lloyd commented. "He led the charge on and off the court with his energy and play."
After Fresno State took the point at #2, Diaz Freire was next off the board at the top of the order, winning a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Mantas Bugailiskis. Needing one more point to capture the team win, Diego Nava answered the call at #6 in the order. Nava posted a hard-fought 1-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5) win over Cem Erturk, putting an end to the overall match and leaving two courts unfinished. Although they did not count toward the decision, LMU's Lukas Moenter and Errol Smith both had a set in the bag on the remaining courts before being halted.
"We continued to build today and found a way to win the doubles point versus Fresno State," Lloyd said. "Once singles rolled around, we were able to come out on top. I am not looking for the team to peak right now, but keep learning each day and embrace the process."
LMU will return to action on Friday, February 20 as it welcomes Cal Poly to the LMU Tennis Center for the home opener. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
