Lions Drop Tough 4-3 Decision at UCR
LMU can't hang on to early 2-0 lead at UC Riverside.
Feb. 27, 2007
Riverside, Calif. - Coming off a road win over 75th-ranked UC Irvine, Loyola Marymount men's tennis looked to continue its damage in the Big West Conference at UC Riverside. The Lions (2-8) got off to a strong start, but could not hold off the Highlanders' (5-3) comeback bid, falling 4-3 on the road.
The Lions started the match up 1-0 after earning the doubles point with wins at No. 2 (Matt Phillips/Nick Perez) and No. 3 (Sam Tadevosian/Renzo Maggi).
Tadevosian continued his good play in singles, dropping UCR's Bobby Tam quickly 6-1, 6-1 at No.4 to put the Lions up 2-0.
At No. 6 singles, Phillips dropped his first set, but fought back and won 6-2 in the third.
With the match tied 3-3, it came down to freshman Nikola Petrov for the second time in two matches. Petrov fought off four match points, but ended up falling 6-4 in third set at No. 2.
"This is a tough position for a freshman to be in," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "I'm really proud of the way Nikola has competed the past couple of matches with everything on the line. In both matches (UCI and UCR) Nikola was battling against upper classmen with much more experience than him. The disappointing thing is that the matches are be coming down to our freshman when we have three seniors and two juniors in the line-up. If some of our upperclassmen don't step up soon, things will continue to be difficult for us. Some leadership from some of these guys would go a long way right now."
The Lions remain on the road for a Ivy League tour that will take them to Yale, Princeton, and Columbia over the next week. Princeton and Columbia have both been in the national rankings in the past few weeks, as the Lions' tough schedule continues.
