LMU Loses Another Close One 4-3

Los Angeles, Calif - In their fourth match this week, LMU Men's Tennis hosted the Yale Bulldogs on Friday afternoon. For the second day in a row, Loyola Marymount suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss.

Yale started the match on top in doubles. The Bulldogs claimed the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. Ivan Lopez and Nick Von Der Ahe picked up their fourth straight victory at the No. 3 doubles position. Lopez and Von Der Ahe defeated Yale's Joel Samaha and Josh Lederman in the longest match of the round. The sophomore from Almeria, Spain and the junior from Park City, Utah tied the match up at 7 before winning the tiebreaker 7-5.

LMU tied up the score again with the first win in the singles round. In the No. 2 position, Ivan Lopez brought home LMU's first singles victory of the day. Lopez defeated the Bulldogs' Michael Caldwell 6-2, 7-5 for his third win this week.

The Lions then took the lead with a win by Geza Bazula. Bazula went extra sets to defeat Joel Samaha 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 for his fourth win this week at the No. 5 spot.

Yale pulled ahead with wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions. After dropping the first set 6-1, Aram Abgaryan fought back to win the second 6-3 but couldn't finish the comeback in the third and fell to Connor Dawson 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the No. 3 spot. Johan Berhof almost took the No. 4 position match into extra sets but couldn't and lost to Calvin Bennet 6-2, 7-6.

Loyola Marymount tied up the match a second time in the No. 6 position. Aris Andreasian won his third match this week in an extra set thriller against Erik Blumenkranz. Andreasian won a hard first set 7-5, lost a close second 5-7, and pulled off the win in the third 6-4.

 

 

The match all came down to the No. 1 singles position. Renzo Maggi found himself in another extra set thriller. Maggi made a triumphant comeback in the second set but couldn't pull off the win and lost to Yale's Jeff Dawson 7-5, 6-7, 6-4.

LMU Men's Tennis will be back home on Monday, March 16. The Lions will take on Cornell for a 1:30 p.m. match.
