Lions Shutout Georgia Southern
March 16, 2005
Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount men's tennis shutout Georgia Southern 7-0 Wednesday afternoon at the LMU Tennis Center. After sweeping the doubles point, the Lions were led by Mike Wojnarowicz, who picked up a big win at the No. 1 spot in singles. In a highly-contested doubles competition, the Lions closed out the point, winning 8-1 at No. 2 and then 8-6 at No. 1. The No. 3 doubles spot was the last court to finish, as Linas Cicenas and Ashton Politanoff held on to win 9-7. In singles play, Wojnarowicz made quick work of Vincent Patry at No. 1, winning 6-0, 6-2. "Mike was hitting big today," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "Patry was talented, but Mike didn't let him settle into the match at all." At No. 6 singles, Mike Chan won in similar fashion, closing out Diego Flores 6-0, 6-2. At the third spot, senior Beau Berglund had little trouble with Germano Knorr, winning 6-4,6-1. But the story was different at the remaining singles spots, as they all went to three sets before LMU players were able to finish off their opponents. "This was very good preparation for our match tomorrow against nationally-ranked Miami," DeVore said. "Georgia Southern was very competitive, but most of our guys came out of the match feeling pretty confident about their games." The Lions host Miami Thursday and Princeton Saturday at the LMU Tennis Center. -GO LIONS- LMU 7, GSU 0 Singles
