LOS ANGELES -- The LMU men’s tennis team fought until the end Sunday but could not hold on for the win as Sacramento St. took a 4-3 decision at the LMU Tennis Center. The Lions drop to 2-13 on the year, while the Hornets improve to 9-10.
In the doubles round, it was all Sacramento St. The Hornets won quickly on Courts 2 and 3, both by a score of 8-1 to clinch the doubles point for the team. On Court 1, Felix Van Kann and Othar Kordsachia were ahead before the match would be declared unfinished once the point had been secured by Sacramento St.
In singles, LMU fell down 2-0 early after the Hornets got a quick win on Court 2. Court 5 was next to finish with Cristobal Rivera getting the 6-1, 6-4 victory for the Lions. Nicholas Bjerke then tied the match up for the Lions with a 7-5, 7-5 win on Court 3. In an intense back and forth match on Court 4, Sebastian Bustamante was able to pull off a 6-3, 0-6, 6-4 win to give the Lions the lead. But that would be where the success ran out for LMU, as Sacramento St. then won in three sets on Court 6 to tie the match and later won in three sets on Court 1 to clinch the team victory.
The Lions will head north next week to play at Santa Clara on Friday and at San Francisco on Saturday.
