Lions Split WCC Matches This Weekend

Santa Clara, Calif. - Loyola Marymount Men's Tennis (5-15, 2-2 WCC) traveled to northern California this weekend for two conference matches. The Lions faced San Francisco on Saturday and Santa Clara on Sunday. LMU lost a close one to the Dons 4-3 on April 4 but won a thriller against the Broncos 4-3 on April 5. On Saturday the Lions fell behind early against San Francisco. LMU lost the doubles point 2-1. Borja Malet and Aris Andreasian got LMU's only doubles victory. Malet and Andreasian topped Torin Ching and Mitch Del Rosario 8-5. LMU made a comeback in the singles round but it wasn't enough. Johan Berhof led the charge for LMU. Berhof captured the No. 2 position 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Coming back from an injury, Aram Abgaryan made an impact for the Lions. Abgarayan won the No. 4 spot 6-7(3), 6-2, 6-3 against Einar Hart. Renzo Maggi also pushed USF in the No. 5 position. Maggie defeated Jacob Hartwig 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. LMU continued their road trip the next day at Santa Clara. This time LMU pulled out the close one against the Broncos 4-3. LMU dropped the doubles round 2-1. Ivan Lopez and Nick Von Der Ahe got LMU's only doubles victory. Lopez and Von Der Ahe defeated Charlie Burke and John Iwanski 8-4 in the No. 3 doubles position. The Lions' luck would change in the singles round. LMU secured four of the six singles positions. Ivan Lopez started it off for LMU. Lopez topped SCU's Jay Wong 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 for his ninth victory of the season.
The bottom half of the singles line up secured the team victory for LMU. Aram Abgaryan, Geza Bazula and Aris Andreasian took home victories in the No. 4, 5, and 6 positions. Abgaryan got his second straight victory since coming back. Abgaryan defeated Tommy Hicks 6-7, 3-6, 6-4 in the No. 4 spot. Geza Bazula got his sixth victory in the No. 5 position. Bazula topped SCU's Burke 7-5, 6-2. Anreasian broke out of slump against SCU. Andreasian broke his four match-losing streak by shutting out Iwanski 6-0, 6-0. Loyola Marymount Men's Tennis will end their regular season play on the road this week. The Lions will travel to UC Irvine on Wednesday then head to Santa Barbara on Saturday to take on UCSB for their final match of the season.
