Lions End Regular Season With Fourth Straight Win
April 14, 2005
Riverside, Calif. - Loyola Marymount men's tennis won its fourth straight match and sixth of its last seventh to close out the regular season with a 5-2 win over UC Riverside. The Lions finish the regular season 10-10 heading into the West Coast Conference tournament next week. LMU won the doubles point with 8-3 and 8-5 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Matt Phillips, Nico Terrien and Linas Cicenas quickly put the match away for the Lions with straight-set wins at No. 5, No. 2 and No. 4 singles. "Matt really gave us a boost with his quick 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "That put us up 2-0 and kept the momentum we had gained from the doubles on our side." Mike Wojnarowicz and Carlos Malet then fell at No. 1 and No. 6 singles to make the score 4-2. That left senior Beau Berglund, who struggled but managed to pull out a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win over Joe Cartledge at No. 3 singles. "This wasn't our best performance of the year," DeVore said, "but we competed pretty hard from top to bottom. I was very pleased with the play of Matt, Nico and Linas today in singles." Next up for the Lions is the WCC Championships held at Pepperdine April 21-24. -GO LIONS- LMU 5, UC Riverside 2 Singles
