San Diego, Calif -
After falling in the first round, Loyola Marymount Men's Tennis (6-18) made a stunning comeback at the WCC Championships on Saturday morning. The Lions fell behind early but dominated the singles round to top the Zags 4-1.
It didn't look good at the beginning. LMU lost the doubles round 2-0. Geza Bazula and Johan Berhof dropped the No. 2 match (8-5) while Ivan Lopez and Nick Von Der Ahe fell in the No. 3 spot 8-6.
However, the singles round was all LMU. The Lions won all of their points in straight sets. They shut out the Zags 4-0. Freshman Aram Abgaryan won his first ever WCC championship match. Abgaryan won the No. 2 position (6-2, 7-6) against Roman Dojcak. Borja Malet almost shut out his opponent in the No. 3 spot. Malet defeated Conor Feeney (6-1, 6-0) to extend his spring singles record to 6-6. Renzo Maggi won his second straight singles match at the Championships today. Maggi topped Scott Sullivan (6-3, 6-3) at the No. 5 position. Geza Bazula brought home the victory for LMU at the No. 6 position. Bazula defeated Tomasz Falkowski (6-2, 6-0) for his ninth victory this season and 18-16 overall record in his first season at LMU.
Loyola Marymount Men's Tennis now advances to the finals of the consolation bracket at the WCC Championships. The Lions will play for fifth place against St. Mary's on Sunday at Barnes Tennis Center. Match Time is set for 8:00 a.m.
