LOS ANGELES -- Last weekend, LMU men’s tennis opened its fall schedule at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center USTA Pro Classic Futures Tournament at The Claremont Club in Claremont, Calif.
Senior Nicholas Bjerke, junior Sebastian Bustamante, sophomore Todd Volmari, and sophomore Felix Van Kann competed in the tournament. Van Kann and Bjerke were paired up in the first round of play, with Bjerke eliminating his teammate early.
Bjerke, Bustamante, and Volmari all advanced to the third round but failed to make it to the round of 16. “This weekend was the first time I’ve seen the guys on the court since they’ve returned after the summer,” said Assistant Coach Aaron Paajanen. “It was encouraging to see three guys make it to the third round after last year only having one player advance after the second round.”
Because of the hot weather throughout the weekend and it being the first tournament of the season, Paajanen was not sure what to expect out of his players.
“Fitness has been a big focus the past season and with brutal conditions all three days with on court temperatures 100 plus degrees, it was good to see guys not be affected by that,” said Paajanen.
The Lions are back in action this weekend at the Costa Mesa Futures tournament. The tournament starts this Friday, Sept. 14.
