Competing at the UCSB Classic over the weekend, freshman Ethan Prost took home a third-place finish in Flight D singles. Freshmen Lucas Moreno and Diego Nava each earned fifth-place finishes in their respective brackets, with Moreno was playing in the Flight B singles, while Nava made his run in Flight C.
Prost began his tournament against Karhtik Padmanabahn of Cal Poly, recording a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 victory. Advancing to Brian Lee of Saint Mary’s, Prost notched a 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over the Gael. Prost would drop the next match to UCSB’s Daunte Harris, 6-2, 6-4, but he would rebound to defeat Andrew Whitehouse of Cal Poly, 6-4, 6-3, in the third-place match.
Moreno opened play against Ross Watson of Pacific, posting a 6-2, 7-6 victory. Now facing Dominic Barretto of Cal, Moreno fell, 6-3, 6-2. A match with UCLA’s Connor Rapp followed, as the Lion defeated Rapp, 6-0, 6-0 to face Axel Damiens of Cal Poly in the fifth-place match. After a hard-fought contest, Moreno emerged with the 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Nava opened play against Daly Meinert of Cal Poly, defeating his opponent, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. In the second round, Nava fell in another great match, dropping the 7-5, 6-4 decision to Catagay Soke of Fresno State. Nava would then play Alexis Alvarez (UW), posting a 7-5, 6-2 win to advance to the fifth-place match against Sebastian Hawken. There, Nava topped his opponent, 6-2, 6-1 to finish fifth.
Cartier Juan and Ryan Brown joined Prost in Flight D. Juan won his first match over Calvin Jordaan (St. Mary’s), 6-4, 6-1, but would drop his next contest, 6-4, 6-0 against Cal Poly’s Alex Stater. Juan would next meet Nathan Hampton of Pacific, dropping the contest, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7), but he would finish strong with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jackson Hawk of St. Mary’s in the seventh-place match. Brown fell into the left portion of the bracket following an opening round loss to Whitehouse, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, but he would rattle off a pair of victories to reach the consolation final. Brown defeated Matt Campana (7-5, 7-6) and Jordaan (6-0, 6-1) of Saint Mary’s along the way before eventually dropping the ninth-place match to Padmanabahn, 6-4, 6-2.
On the doubles side, Moreno and Nava combined to take fifth place in Flight B. The duo dropped an opening round match to Kaya/Matta of Cal, but then posted victories over Davis/Alvarez (UW) and Vollenweider/Bot (Saint Mary’s) to take fifth.
Prost and Brown also teamed in doubles, going 1-2 over three matches in Flight D. The pair managed an 8-5 win over Hawk/Krutik of Saint Mary’s in its first match of the tournament on Friday.
The Lions will now prepare for the ITA Regionals from Malibu, Calif on October 19.
