IRVINE, Calif -- Over the weekend, four members of the LMU men’s tennis team competed in the Southwest Pre-Regionals held at UC Irvine. The event featured teams from southern California that will compete in two weeks at the same site at UC Irvine in the ITA Regional tournament. In a series of matches, the Lions went 5-3 in singles and 5-1 in doubles.
On Friday, the doubles team of sophomore Othar Kordsachia and senior Jack Zapala defeated a pair from Wofford College, 9-7. On Saturday, the same duo defeated a doubles team Concordia University, 8-0, before defeating a different team from Wofford, 9-8.
The other LMU doubles team consisted of juniors Nick Northcott and Daniel Simko. On Friday, they defeated a team from Wofford, 8-4. Saturday, Northcott and Simko beat a team from UC Irvine, 9-7, before losing to a different team from Wofford on Saturday, 8-3.
As far as singles play goes, Simko defeated a player from Wofford, 6-1, 6-4, and also defeated a player from Concordia, 6-3, 6-1, on Friday. Saturday, Simko continued his hot streak with a win over an opponent from UC Riverside by a score of, 7-6, 6-4. Sunday, he finally cooled down when he lost to a different player from UC Riverside 6-4, 6-1.
Kordsachia lost his first match to a UC Irvine opponent, 6-2, 6-2, before defeating an opponent from UC Riverside 6-2, 6-3. The following day, he beat another player from UC Riverside 7-6, 6-1. On Sunday, Kordsachia played a third UC Riverside opponent but lost 4-6, 6-4, 3-10.
The Lions take a weekend off this weekend to prepare to return to Irvine the following weekend for the ITA Regionals that begin Friday, Oct. 19.
