Gabriel Diaz Freire has advanced to the quarterfinal round at the ITA Southwest Regional hosted by Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. The sophomore defeated Jake Devine of USC, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, before moving past Simon Freund (UCSB), 6-2, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5) in the round of 16 on Friday.
Nick Borchenko and Max Kaiser also had successful days on Friday, with both players winning a fourth-round match in the consolation bracket. Borchenko defeated Luiz Leonardo Andreolli (GCU), 6-2, 6-4, while Kaiser knocked off Pepperdine's Dane Esses, 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Freshman Ethan Prost, competing in the consolation bracket, defeated Freddie Grant (GCU), 7-6 (3), 7-5 in the third round of singles.
Diaz was also playing in the round of 16 in doubles, but he and Borchenko dropped a decision to Holm/Moreno de Alboran (UCSB), 8-5. Lukas Moenter and Lucas Moreno also fell in doubles play, suffering an 8-3 setback at the hands of Heim/Lopez (UCI) in the main draw.
LMU will continue play at the Southwest Regional on Saturday.
