Malibu, Calif. -- The LMU men’s tennis team had four players competing in singles and doubles at the ITA Southwest regional hosted by Pepperdine University this weekend.
Sophomore Cristobal Rivera was the stand-out for LMU in the singles draw, earning two key victories. In the opening round of play, Rivera defeated Sasha Gryaznov of UCSB 6-4, 6-3 before taking down Naveen Beasley of Cal Poly 7-5, 6-2. In the third round, Rivera gave a strong performance but fell just short to UCLA’s Gage Brymer in a tough three set match.
The other Lion finding success this weekend was sophomore David Doehring. After a close setback in the singles draw, Doehring found his rhythm in the consolation bracket. He defeated Hawaii’s Chris Meyer 6-2, 6-1 and then beat UCSB’s Ziad Sultan 6-3, 6-0. Doehring’s run finally ended in the consolation quarterfinals in a three set match with UCLA’s Seth Stolar.
In doubles, the lone Lion win came when the pair of Rivera and senior Daniel Simko defeated a team from Pepperdine 8-5.
Next up for LMU men’s tennis team is the SoCal Intercollegiates in Los Angeles starting October 30.
