Malibu, CA - Loyola Marymount men's tennis traveled to Pepperdine this past weekend to participate in the Wilson/ITA Western Region VIII Championships. The highlights of the tournament were freshmen Ivan Lopez and Johan Berhof, who showed their potential to be important assets to the Lions this season.

In singles play, Lopez and Berhof made it to the third round where they were defeated by top seeded players. Lopez fell to Jaak Poldma from USC (6-2, 7-6) while Berhof lost to Pepperdine's Mahmoud Kamel (6-1, 6-4). With a little more experience both Lopez and Berhof will prove to be solid players and strong contenders to go further in the tournament next year.

In other singles play, Senior Jacek Twarowski lost (6-4, 6-2) in the second round to the eventual tournament winner, number one seeded Andre Bregeman of Pepperdine. Sophomore Dmitry Popov was defeated in the second round of the tournament by Claudio Christian from Arizona (6-0 6-1). Rob Foy of Cal Poly beat sophomore Renzo Maggi in three sets in the first round, 6-1 3-6 6-2 while senior Sam Tadevosian fell to San Diego State's Achim Seban (7-5, 6-3). Sophomore Nick Von Der Ahe was defeated in the first round of play by Ravid Hazi of Arizona who took the match, 6-1 6-0. Freshman Stefan Nikolic played well in the first round to move on to the second where he lost to Fresno State's Denny Fafek (6-1 6-4).

In doubles play, three out of LMU's four doubles teams moved to the second round of play. The duo of Maggi and Tadevosian moved on to round two where they faced the number one seeded team, USC's Farah and Van't Hof. At one point in the match, Maggi and Tadevosian had the lead (7-3) but could not hold on and fell to the USC duo, the eventual winners of the tournament. Nikolic and Lopez also won in round one to move to the second where they were defeated by UCLA's Dehaine and Srugo, 8-1

Twarowski and Berhof lost their match in the second round to Beidas and Lemke of Pepperdine (8-5) while Von Der Ahe and Popov were beaten by Gogin/Koginsfelft of UCSB (8-5) in round one of tournament play.
