It's a new year for LMU men's tennis. After a disappointing four-win season in 2013, the start to 2014 couldn't come soon enough for the Lions. Out of 10 teams in the West Coast Conference, the Lions were picked to finish 8th in the WCC Preseason Poll. But new head coach Tom Lloyd and his team have loftier goals in mind.
In his first year at the helm of the LMU program, Lloyd is excited to get the season started and hopes to take his team to the top of the conference. His goal is to win the WCC, and with the great features of the University along with the athletic facilities, he believes there's no reason why LMU can't become a conference leader.
The 2014 squad will be led by seniors Sebastian Bustamante and Daniel Simko. Simko was recently voted by the players to be team captain for the Lions. Juniors Felix Van Kann and Othar Kordsachia are coming off a breakout season in which they won WCC Doubles Team of the Month last March and received honors for All-WCC Second Team in doubles. Other notable returners are junior Todd Volmari and sophomore Cristobal Rivera who will be looking to make a big impact on the team.
The Lions also have a set of exciting newcomers who joined the team this year. Sophomore transfer David Doehring played very well in the fall and looks to keep his momentum in the spring. Freshmen Ivan Jelic, Luke Bohuslav, and Charles Boyce were also added to the roster this year and look to help improve the team as well.
LMU opens play on the road this weekend when they take on Sacramento State on Saturday and UC Davis on Sunday.
