SAN DIEGO - Loyola Marymount men's tennis will face 63rd-ranked Santa Clara Friday at 1:30 p.m. in first round action at the West Coast Conference Championship hosted by the University of San Diego. The seventh-seeded Lions (8-13, 1-3) will battle the second-seeded Broncos (19-6, 5-1 WCC), with a trip to the WCC semifinals at stake.
The Lions played four matches this spring against WCC teams, but none against 63rd-ranked Santa Clara, who LMU faces in the first round Friday. However, the match-up is a repeat of the 2006 WCC Championship first round pairing, which Santa Clara went on to win en route to a fourth place finish.
The winner of the LMU-Santa Clara first round match-up will face the winner of 3rd-seeded San Diego and 6th-seeded San Francisco Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Lions, who finished sixth at last year's WCC Championship, have finished as high as third place in the WCC. They reached the top-3 in 2004, 2002, and 1990. The tough WCC boasts the defending national champion in Pepperdine, who enters the weekend as the WCC's top seed and the No.18 rank nationally.
The Lions enter the WCC Championships having won four of their last six matches. Earlier in the season, the Lions also topped 75th-ranked UC Irvine on the road.
Terrien, a 2006 All-WCC second-team selection, will finish his LMU tenure ranked second all-time in career singles victories. He enters the tournament this weekend with 75 career wins.
