Smith Named Player of Week, #69 LMU Prepares for #61 Waves

After helping #69 LMU to a 3-0 week last week, sophomore Errol Smith has been named West Coast Conference Singles Player of the Week.

Smith went 3-0 on the week, helping LMU to victories over San Francisco, Santa Clara and Gonzaga to clinch a spot in the WCC Championship. Smith played at No. 2 singles on Friday and Sunday against USF and Gonzaga while competing at No. 3 singles on Saturday against Santa Clara. Smith's week started with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over USF's Ryan Marker before he topped Andrew Gu of Santa Clara, 6-3, 6-0, to help the Lions clinch the spot in the WCC Championship. Playing in his third match in as many days, Smith defeated Gonzaga's Ruadhan O'Sullivan, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to clinch the Lion win and cap his 3-0 week.

The weekly selection is the second for the Lions since the WCC went to weekly awards, with Smith previously earning the nod on February 24, 2015. Prior to that, LMU last earned WCC Player of the Month for February of 2012 when Nicholas Bjerke earned the award.

The conference also announced the seeding for the 2016 WCC Men's Tennis Championships which begin on Thursday. LMU, the #6 seed, will open play against third-seed #61 Pepperdine at 10 a.m.
