July 8, 2014
LMU men's tennis sophomore Luke Bohuslav recently won an ITA Summer Circuit event held at San Jose State. Bohuslav, seeded second in the singles draw, eventually defeated fourth-seed Sreyas Kolachalam (Campbell, Calif.) in the finals, 6-2, 7-5.
Bohuslav, who went 4-8 as a freshman at LMU in 2014 while competing primarily at the #5 and #6 spots in the order, opened the bracket with a victory (7-6, 6-4) over Nick Castro before defeating Spencer Simonides, 3-6, 6-3 (8), to advance to the semifinal. In the semi, the native of Orinda, Calif. defeated Edward Ang 7-5, 6-2, punching his ticket into the final against Kolachalam.
Nearly 30,000 men and women have competed in ITA Summer Circuit events since it began in 1993. The circuit provides college (and junior and alumni) players the opportunity to compete in organized events virtually year round. Although the primary focus of the circuit is to provide incoming freshmen and collegiate players the chance to compete in the summer months, for NCAA compliance purposes, the events within the ITA Summer Circuit are categorized as "open"; therefore anyone is eligible to compete in these events as long as he/she is a current ITA member.
The 2014 ITA Summer Circuit is currently made up of nine regional circuits (Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Midwest, Central, Mountain, Texas, Northern California and Southern California) consisting of four consecutive open tournaments played during the month of July, leading up to the ITA/USTA National Summer Championships in Bloomington, Indiana in August.
Bohuslav will take the next two Summer Circuit events off, but will return to play from July 26-28 at Sonoma State. For more information on the ITA Summer Circuit, and to track Luke's progress, please click the link below:
