LOS ANGELES -- The LMU men’s tennis team will continue is fall tournament schedule at the Racquet Club of Irvine, Calif. this weekend where the Lions will compete in the Irvine Futures tournament. The tournament will feature some of the world’s best amateur tennis players, including many current and former collegiate tennis players.
It will be the third tournament in three weekends for LMU tennis after playing in the Claremont and Costa Mesa futures tournaments. The previous two tournaments featured temperatures near 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). Luckily this weekend’s temperatures are expected to be closer to normal.
After most of the team returned to their home country to play tennis over summer vacation, September has been a month full of matches in California, allowing for the Men’s Tennis coaching staff to get reacquainted with his players.
Senior Nicholas Bjerke, junior Sebastian Bustamante, sophomore Todd Volmari, and sophomore Felix Van Kann competed in season-opening Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center USTA Pro Classic Futures Tournament. Van Kann and Bjerke were paired up in the first round of play, with Bjerke eliminating his teammate early. Bjerke, Bustamante, and Volmari all advanced to the third-round but failed to make it to the round of 16.
At last week’s Costa Mesa Futures, In the first round of the qualifying draw, sophomore Felix Van Kann defeated American Brian Iklaban 6-0, 6-0 while LMU newcomer and sophomore transfer Othar Kordsachia won his match 7-6 (6), 6-3 over American Jayson Amos. Sophomore Todd Volmari lost his opening match 3-6, 5-7 to American Devin Lane while junior Daniel Simko lost his first match 2-6, 0-6 to American Ryan Thacher.
The Irvine Futures tournament begins this Friday, Sept. 21.
