Lions Fly to Oklahoma for ITA All-American Championships
LMU men's tennis takes it first trip out-of-state for the season to compete with world's best young players.
Sept. 27, 2012
LOS ANGELES -- After three consecutive weekends competing in local futures tournaments, the LMU men’s tennis team will travel to Tulsa, Okla. this weekend to play in the 2012 ITA Men’s All-American Championships.
Only four players from one school are allowed to play in each tournament. The Lions had a strong showing in their opening tournament in Claremont, Calif., with sophomore Todd Volmari, junior Sebastian Bustamante, and senior Nicholas Bjerke all advanced to the third round of the qualifying draw.
At the Irvine Futures tournament this past weekend, junior Daniel Simko and Volmari advanced to the second round before falling there as well.
The team has gotten considerable experience throughout the past month. The futures tournaments have provided competition against some of the best current and former collegiate players in the country. These events have also been a chance for most of the team to play back in tournament competition in California in front of the LMU coaching staff for the first time following summer vacation.
The ITA Men’s All-American Championships takes place at the University of Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center beginning Saturday, Sept. 29.
