Lopez, Von Der Ahe Victorious in Doubles Final at Chandler Cup
The doubles duo of Ivan Lopez and Nik Von Der Ahe led the Lions at the Chandler Cup Invitational.

The Loyola Marymount men's tennis team concluded the Chandler Cup Invitational hosted by UC Berkeley in northern California on Sunday. The doubles duo of freshman Ivan Lopez and sophomore Nick Von Der Ahe were the most successful Lions placing first in the Flight C Doubles bracket while freshman Stefan Nikolic reached the finals of the Flight B Consolation Singles.
In singles play of the weekend-long tournament, Nikolic proved to be a highlight for the Lions. Although losing in the Flight B main draw to Washington's Ryo Sekiguchi (6-2, 6-2), he moved on to the consolation round and played well. Nikolic defeated Max Ortiz of UC Santa Cruz (6-4, 7-6(5)) to advance to the quarterfinals where he was victorious over Sacramento's Sven-David Rueff (6-1, 6-1). A win over UCSD's Blake Meister (1(10-6)) put Nikolic in the finals of the Flight B Consolation Singles where he fell to Eric Rubens of UCSD (6-0, 6-0).
Freshman Johan Berhof was defeated by Pacific's Vegerd Veskimagi in round one of the Flight B singles (2-6, 6-1, 6-4). He then moved to the consolation round where he beat Ilya Gendelman of UC Santa Cruz (6-2, 6-3) and Nevada's Alex Daruty (6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (13-11)) to reach the semifinals. Berhof was defeated in the semifinal match by UC San Diego's Eric Rubens, 6-1, 6-1.
Competing in the Flight A singles, Freshman Ivan Lopez lost in the main draw to Cal's Bo Katsarov (6-4, 6-4). He then moved to round one in the consolation bracket where he defeated Darryn Young of Cal Poly (6-3, 6-1) before losing in the quarterfinals to Washington's Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0, (10-7).
Senior Jacek Twarowski lost in the round of 32 to Anton Stryhas of Sacramento (6-2, 6-2) before moving to the back draw where he fell to Boise State's Piotr Dilaj, 7-6(8), 7-6(4). Senior Sam Tadevosian lost in the main draw to Laurent Garcin of Nevada (6-1, 6-3). In the back draw of the tournament, he fell to Cal's Jonathan Dahan (6-1, 6-0).
In the Flight C singles, sophomore Nick Von Der Ahe was defeated by Nick Amaroli from UC Davis in the first round (6-1, 6-4). As a result he moved to the consolation bracket where he lost to Silvio Chiba of UC Santa Cruz (6-1, 6-2). Sophomore Dmitry Popov also competed in the Flight C singles where he fell in the first round to Nick Lopez of UC Davis (6-1, 6-1) before moving to the back draw and losing to Sonoma State's Alex Perkins (6-2, 6-4).
The highlight of the tournament for the Lions was the stellar play of Lopez and Von Der Ahe in the Flight C Doubles play. The duo, who started off with a bye in the round of 16, played and defeated Cal's Andy Chirita and Nico Horgen in the quarterfinals, 8-6. In the semifinals, Lopez and Von Der Ahe took the match over Colin MrkGriffin and Kian Fattahi of UC Santa Cruz, 8-2 allowing them to advance to the final round of the doubles play. In the finals, the pair faced Ryo Sekiguchi and Skyler Tateishi of Washington. Playing with great energy and executing the game plan perfectly, Lopez and Von Der Ahe defeated the Huskies 8-5 to take first place in the Flight C Doubles bracket.
In other play, Twarowski teamed up with Nikolic in the Flight B Doubles stealing their first match against Justin Garcia and Shaun Garcia of UC Davis, 8-5. Moving to the quarterfinals the pair faced Washington's Alex Rosinski and Martin Killdalh, who took the match from the Lions, 8-6. In the Flight A doubles, Tadevosian and Berhof lost in the main draw to Stanford's Greg Hirshman and Kevin Kaiser, 8-0. They then played and lost in the consolation quarterfinals to Boise State's Eric Roberson and Cal Poly's Drew Jacobs, 8-4.
The Lions will compete next in the Southern California Intercollegiate Tournament November 1 in Los Angeles, CA.
