Lions Rebound to Place Third
Men's water polo overcomes heartbreaker three hours earlier to defeat No. 9 Long Beach State 12-8 to place third at Triton Invitational.
Sept. 7, 2008
La Jolla, CA - Playing a marathon sudden death overtime heartbreaker just three hours prior, the No. 9 Loyola Marymount men's water polo team showed their senior leadership and recovered with a 12-8 win over No. 9 Long Beach State in the third place game of the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
The Lions finish the tournament 3-1 with three wins over top-20 programs, including No. 6 UC Santa Barbara on Saturday and No. 9 Long Beach State in the third place game. Sophomore Tibor Forai led the Lions in scoring with another hat-trick. He had 10 goals in the four games on the weekend.
LMU showed no hangover from their heartbreaker against USC earlier in the day, jumping on the 49ers early and often, posting a 5-1 lead after the first period. Forai had two goals in the frame as the lead would never drop below three goals. The teams then traded goals the rest of the way including 12 combined goals in the second half.
The Lions return home to face the second-ranked Trojans on Friday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. and then No. 7 Pepperdine on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 11:30 a.m.
