Final Stats

San Diego, CA (Sept. 8, 2002) - The Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team had an uphill battle to climb in the championship round of the UC San Diego Invitational at Canyonview Pool on Sunday. The Lions fell to No. 4 USC 7-4 in the first match of the day on Sunday, and then fell to host UC San Diego in the invitational's final match, 6-4.

After scoring 32 combined goals in two games the opening day, the Lions managed just eight tallies on Sunday. Against the Trojans, LMU fell down 6-2 at the half and could recover. The Lions, who will face USC at least two more times including next Saturday at the USC tournament, are 0-4 all-time against the Trojans.

In the game the Lions had goals from Endre Rex-Kiss (5th of the season), Ryan Chapatte (6), Andrew Jensen (3) and Sean Wimer (2).

The Lions then had to face the host Tritons, who LMU has never beaten at Canyonview Pool. LMU fell down 4-1 at the half thanks to a pair of goals by Bryon Spicer and Jonathan Hopkins for the Tritons.

LMU charged back to 4-3 on goals be Adam Zintsmaster, Chapatte and Scott Smith. However, they wouldn't get any closer. Junior Kris Barr earned the Lions only other goal. Chapatte finished the opening weekend leading the Lions in goals with seven.

LMU will travel to the Southern Cal Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 14-15. The Lions will face Pacific at 9:15 a.m. and then USC at 6:30 p.m. on the opening day. The tournament features 12 teams who finished in the top-20 last season.
