Men’s Water Polo Falls to Higher Ranked Teams in Conference Showdown

MALIBU, Calif. – The GCC vs. WWPA Challenge featured four ranked teams from the two respective conferences on Saturday at Pepperdine’s Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. LMU and UC San Diego represent the Western Water Polo Association and Pepperdine and UC Irvine are a part of the Golden Coast Conference.

Game 1: #8 Pepperdine 12, #T-18 Loyola Marymount 4

Pepperdine jumped out to an early five goal lead in the first quarter and scored the game’s first six goals before LMU’s Jacob Markle and Matt Braun scored back-to-back goals to put the Lions on the board in the second quarter.

After Pepperdine went ahead, 10-2, Neil LeVecke bookended the third and fourth quarters a pair of even-strength goals, before LMU eventually lost the game, 12-4.


Game 2: #T-11 UC Irvine 15, #T-18 Loyola Marymount 8

The Lions again fell behind to a 5-0 deficit after the first quarter. The Anteaters scored seven unanswered before Alessio Brunochelli put LMU on the board with 4:46 to play in the second.



UCI added one more before Neil LeVecke and Edward Moss closed out the half with consecutive goals.

The Lions added three in the third by Joseph Shaw, Zach Gleason, and Alessio Brunochelli and a pair in the fourth by LeVecke and Christian Huhn.

Dominic Beaudine recorded double-digit saves in the game, finishing with 11 in his 32 minutes in goal. 

LMU plays its first conference game of the season on Sept. 16 at Fresno Pacific. The game will have a noon start.
