Down to the Wire For PCH Cup
Lions final attempt to send game to overtime is saved as Pepperdine earns 11-10 win.
LOS ANGELES - LMU’s Matt Cuozzo gave the Lions one last chance with a steal with 28 seconds left. However, Pepperdine’s Zack Rhodes made one of his 13 saves to give the Waves an 11-10 win in the Wells Fargo PCH Cup battle on Friday afternoon at the Burns Recreation Center.
In a game fitting of a rivalry, both teams would take leads only to have the other come back. With the game tied at 9-9, back-to-back goals by Justin Cowan and Sean Thomas gave the Waves (2-1) and 11-9 lead with 6:18 to play in the game.
However, Cuozzo would core with 1:49 left to set-up LMU’s chance to send the game to overtime. Rhodes would make the big save with three seconds left. He had six in the fourth quarter.
The game featured 22 ejections, 15 by the Lions, and a pair of misconduct ejections. Pepperdine was 6-for-15 on the 6-on-5 attack while the Lions went 3-for-7.
Marko Madaras had five goals in three quarters to lead the Waves. The Lions had a balanced attack with eight players scoring, including two from Cory McGee and Cuozzo. Sophomore Dominick Beaudine had 10 saves.
The Lions will host a triple header on Satuday, Sept. 19. They will face Whittier at 9 am and Pomona-Pitzer at 3 pm. The Poets and Sagehens will play at noon.
