Men's Water Polo Defeats No. 10 UCSB
Sept. 15, 2002
Los Angeles, CA -- Thanks to a hat-trick by junior Ryan Chapatte, the Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team, ranked No. 7 in the nation, earned a 6-5 win over No. 10 UC Santa Barbara at the Southern Cal Tournament Sunday afternoon. The win puts the Lions into the ninth-place game against No. 12 Navy, who upset UC San Diego 7-5, at 7:40 p.m. Chapatte, the Lions leading scorer heading into the tournament but shutout the first day, broke through with a three-goal outing to help the Lions (3-4) to break a four-game skid, all coming against teams in the top-10. Senior Kevin Witt added his third and fourth goals of the season with a pair against Gauchos, who fall to 1-4 on the season. All-American goalie Kevin Paulsen did his part in the win, stopping 10 UCSB shots, including a scoreless fourth period to make the one-goal lead stand.
