Fourth Quarter Difference in Top-10 Doubleheader
Full crowds at Burns Aquatics Center watch doubleheader against a pair of top-10 teams on Saturday.
LOS ANGELES - LMU hosted the first Conference Challenge Cup on Saturday, welcoming both No. 8 UC Irvine and No. 9 Pepperdine from the Golden Coast Conference in a doubleheader. The Lions found themselves following a similar script for a full house at the Burns Aquatics Center.
The Lions (2-6) found a big third quarter push in both contests to tie the game at 5-5. However, both the Waves (7-1) and the Anteaters (5-2) used big fourth quarter pushes of their own to claim 11-6 and 9-7 wins, respectively.
Sophomore Eric Reitmeir led the Lions with seven goals in the two games, scoring four goals against UC Irvine and then three more on just three attempts against Pepperdine.
Playing in front of spirited crowds in both contests, the Lions erased multi-goal deficits in both games to tie the games at 5-5 late in the third.
In the opener, the Lions trained UC Irvine, 5-3, and closed the third quarter with back-to-back goals. Jon Beck scored on a 6-on-5 with 4:02 to play in the third quarter and then Reitmeir tied the game at 5-5. at the 2:44 mark.
UC Irvine then scored the first four goals of the final period to pull away.
In front of nearly 1,000 fans thanks in large part to large contingents from Sigma Phi Epsilon, The Cage, and the LMU S.A.A.C., the Lions erased a 5-2 lead with a strong third quarter to tie the game at 5-5.
The Lions trailed 5-2 at the break to the Waves, but opened the second half with a goal from Reitmeir to make 5-3. Reitmeir did it again with 4:42 to play to make 5-4 on an extra-man goal. Riley Smith then tied the game at 5-5 with 2:42 to play.
The Waves then scored the next five goals to pull away.
LMU will play a pair of Western Water Polo Association contests next week, traveling to UC San Diego on Wednesday before hosting Fresno State next Saturday.
