LOS ANGELES -- LMU men's water polo used an early 5-1 lead in the first quarter to push them to a 13-7 win over Pomona-Pitzer in Western Water Polo Association action at the Burns Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. The Lions improve to 4-4 on the season while the Sagehens fall to 0-11.

Freshman Milutin Mitrovic paced the 10th-ranked Lions attack in the first quarter, scoring three of his four goals in the frame as the Lions led 5-1 after one. Matt Stipanovich and Vuk Cvetkovic added a pair of goals each in the win.

LMU would score the first two goals of the second quarter to lead 7-1 after Robert Pusic's goal with 5:17 remaining. The Sagehens scored the last two goals of the quarter to cut the lead to 7-3 at the break.

Pomona-Pitzer scored the first goal of the third quarter to make it 7-4 with 6:41 to play. However, the Lions scored the next two, the first by Jon Colton and the second by Vuk Cvetkovic, to make it 9-4 with 2:42 to play in the third stanza.

After a Sagehen goal, the Lions closed the quarter with a pair of goals, including Joe Ferretti's with just two seconds remaining to make it 11-5 after three.

The teams traded goals in the fourth quarter for the 13-7 final.

 

 

The Lions will head to La Jolla, Calif., to take on rival UC San Diego on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.
