Irvine, CA. --- Senior utility player Chris Kirchwehm scored four goals and sophomore utility player Garrett Gentry (Corona del Mar HS) added three to lift seventh-ranked UC Irvine over No. 11 Loyola Marymount, 11-9, in non-conference action at the Anteater Aquatics Complex Thursday night.
The Anteaters, 2-2 overall, broke open a close game with three unanswered goals in the second quarter to take an 8-4 halftime lead. Kirchwehm and Gentry scored five of UCI's goals in the opening two periods.
Kirchwehm scored to give the Anteaters a 5-3 lead with 59 seconds remaining in the first quarter, but LMU's Stephen Lipinski netted a penalty shot with 42 seconds left to cut the margin to 5-4. Gentry scored twice in the second quarter and freshman Rick Merlo once to give UCI its 8-4 lead at
The Lions' Kevin Witt and Kyle Witt scored back-to-back goals early in the third quarter to pull LMU within 8-6, but Kirchwehm and senior John Dorfi answered for UCI to give the Anteaters a 10-6 lead after three periods.
After LMU's Scott Smith scored with 6:13 left in the game to cut UCI's lead to 10-7, Kirchwehm scored his final goal of the night with 3:52 left for an 11-7 cushion. The Lions' Kevin Witt and Kris Barr scored in the final two minutes for the final margin.
Junior goalie Doug Finfrock had 10 saves for the Anteaters, while Kevin Paulsen recorded five for LMU, now 5-4 on the year.
LMU takes a week off from games and will play at UC Santa Barbara on Friday, Oct. 6, at 4:00 p.m.
