Irvine, CA (Oct. 18) - Playing UC Irvine for the second time in five days, the Loyola Marymount men's water polo team saw their chance to knock off the Anteaters for the second straight game fall short as UCI redshirt freshman Brandon Johnson scored with one second remaining in regulation to lift No. 9 UC Irvine past seventh-ranked LMU, 10-9, in a non-conference game at Anteater Pool Thursday night.
Johnson's goal came after Loyola Marymount had taken possession with 43 seconds left but could not convert. UCI coach Marc Hunt called timeout with 13 seconds left to set up the game-winning shot.
LMU, after trailing 8-6 late in the third quarter, scored three straight goals to take a 9-8 lead. Mark Milovic scored the first two goals in that stretch to tie the game and Brian Benedetti put the Lions up 9-8 on a goal with 4:33 left.
UCI junior Cole Bielskis scored his third goal of the game with 1:41 remaining to pull the Anteaters even at 9-9 and setting the stage for Johnson's game-winning shot.
The win avenged a 6-4 defeat to LMU last Sunday in the seventh-place game of the Southern California Tournament at UCI.
Tibor Forai led LMU (7-12) with three goals while Benedetti and Milovic added two each.
