LMU Can't Find Offense Against USC
Oct. 20, 2004
Los Angeles, CA (Oct. 20) -- The sixth-ranked Loyola Marymount University men's water polo could not find their balanced offense as they dropped a 10-2 decision to third-ranked USC at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference battle. The Lions trailed by just one goal after the first period as Endre Rex-Kiss scored on a four-meter shot with 2:16 remaining to tie the game at 1-1. With just 26 seconds remaining in the period Garrett Gentry scored the first of six extra-man goals as they took the lead for good. USC improves to 15-2 on the year while the Lions fall to 13-6. The difference in the game was the extra-man attack as the Lions went 0-8, earning four opportunities in each half, including a goalie exclusion. While the Lions could not convert, USC did, hitting on 6-of-9. USC broke the game open with seven unanswered goals that started with the last second goal to close the first quarter. USC led 6-1 at the break and extended the lead to 8-1 before Tyler Swanson scored the Lions only other goal with 3:40 remaining in the third quarter. USC goalie Adam Shiling helped the Trojans' cause with eight saves. Ian Elliott had seven for LMU. The Lions will take on fourth-ranked UC Santa Barbara at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon at 12:00 p.m.
