Water Polo Pulls Away from Rival
Lions use 12-3 run to knock-off rival, UC San Diego, 14-10.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Trailing 5-2, 11th-ranked LMU erupted on a 12-3 run to lift them to a 14-10 win over No. 10 UC San Diego in Western Water Polo Association action at the Burns Aquatics Center Friday afternoon. The Lions improve to 8-1 in the WWPA and 11-6 overall while UC San Diego falls to 9-3 in conference and 11-7 overall.
It was the fourth meeting of the season between the two WWPA rivals, and the Lions avenge a 9-5 loss suffered on Oct. 2 at the SoCal Invitational. Edgaras Asajavicius scored four goals for the Lions, while Joe Ferretti and Jon Colton scored three apiece.
Asajavicius scored the first goal of the game as the Lions led 1-0. Colton would score the second to make it a 2-2 game with 5:12 to play in the opening half.
The Tritons then looked to take control early, with a goal from John Butler and a pair of goals from Graham Saber, including his second at the 6:17 mark of the second quarter to take a 5-2 lead.
LMU would then score the next four goals to start their run to take over the game. Four different scored in the run, including Ferretti's goal with 3:09 to play in the half to give LMU a 6-5 lead.
UC San Diego would tie the game with less than a minute remaining in the half on a 6-on-5 goal from Josh Stiling.
The teams would trade goals start the second half, making it 7-7 less than a minute into the third quarter.
LMU would then take over. Asajavicius would score on a 6-on-5 at the 6:34 mark, followed by Colton's third goal of the game with 2:15 to play to make it 9-7. Then with six seconds left in the third, Max Schlegel scored to make it 10-7.
The Lions stretch the lead to 11-7 on another score from Asajavicius for their largest lead of the game. The teams would trade goals the remainder of the game for the final margin.
The Lions will continue their six-game homestand when they take on 18th-ranked Cal Baptist on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 3 p.m.
