Slow Start Hurts Lions Against Cal
Oct. 27, 2002
Los Angeles, CA (Oct. 27, 2002) --Thanks to four unanswered goals in the first quarter by third-ranked California, the seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team couldn't recover from the slow start as the Bears went on to win by a score of 9-3 at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon. Chris Lathrop and Attila Banhidy scored two goals a piece in the first period to pace the Bears to an early 4-0 lead. The Lions would cut the lead to two goals in the second period on goals by freshman Endre Rex-Kiss and junior Tamas Szego. The Bears, however, would match the Lions goal-for-goal in both the second and the third period and then add two unanswered in the fourth to improve to 13-4 on the season. The Lions, who defeated sixth-ranked Pepperdine earlier in the week, fall to 11-12 on the year. It was a hard fought game from the start with the teams combining for 15 total ejections on the day. The Bears would capitalize on the extra-man advantage three times, including Banhidy's third goal of the game in the second period. The Lions would score two extra-man goals themselves, including junior Ryan Chapatte's goal in the third period that cut the lead to 7-3. Greg Panawek and Brian Rieben would score in the fourth for the final margin. LMU will host USC on Friday, Nov. 1 at 3:00 p.m. and then UC Santa Cruz on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 11:00 a.m.
