Lions Pull Away From Lancers in 11-7 Win
Oct. 27, 2011
LOS ANGELES - The LMU men's water polo team used a 4-0 scoring run in the third quarter to pull away for an 11-7 win over visiting Cal Baptist Thursday at the Burns Recreation Center. The Lions improve to 12-6 overall with the non-conference win while Cal Baptist falls to 20-8 on the year. A sluggish start left the No. 11 ranked Lions and No. 18 ranked Lancers knotted a 1-1 through the first period. Two goals by Edgaras Asajavicius, one by Joe Ferretti and one by John Mikuzius gave the Lions a slim 5-4 lead by halftime. But the turning point was the third quarter as LMU struck for four unanswered goals, including two following exclusions, to take a 9-4 lead. Jon Carlton and Robert Pusic each tallied a goal before Ferretti scored back-to-back goals, giving the Lions their largest lead of the game. After being held scoreless for nearly 12:30 minutes, the Lancers finally broke through at the 6:39 mark of the fourth quarter, scoring on a five-meter penalty shot. Charlie Horton answered right back for LMU, pushing the lead to 10-5. A penalty shot by Pusic made it 11-5 before the Lancers scored twice in the final minute. The Lions are back in action at the Burns Center on Sunday for a key WWPA match-up against No. 12 UC Davis. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
