Water Polo Earns Pair Of Wins

LOS ANGELES - The Loyola Marymount University men's water polo team earned a pair of victories during a three-team round robin on a rainy Saturday at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center. The seventh-ranked Lions defeated 20th-ranked Air Force 13-7 in the first game and Redlands 10-2 in the final game. Air Force defeated Redlands 13-7 in the second game of the day.

With the wins, the Lions improve to 15-13 on the season while Air Force goes to 12-11. Redlands, Air Force and LMU will play in the Western Water Polo Association Championships on Nov. 22-23 at UC San Diego. The winner earns a bid to the 2002 NCAA Men's Water Polo Championships at Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center, hosted by LMU Dec. 7-8.

Game 1: Loyola Marymount 13, Air Force 7
Air Force goalie Brandon Shroyer made 10 first half saves to keep the Falcons down just two goals at the half, 4-2. However, the Lions scored seven goals in the third quarter, including three by junior Ryan Chapatte to pull away. Chapatte finished the game with five goals, while seniors Kevin Witt and Eric Lefebrve each scored two goals.

After Lefebrve gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead in the first quarter, Air Force's Josh Jewett scored with one second remaining to tie the game. LMU would regain the lead at 2-1 on a goal by Witt at the 6:20 mark of the second quarter. Murphey Morgan for the Falcons tied the game again at 2-2 with 4:40 remaining. Chapatte would then score his first two goals of the game to close out the first half and give LMU the lead for good. Jewett and Charles Horn led the Falcons with two goals each.

Lions' goalie Kevin Paulsen made five of his nine saves in the third quarter to help the Lions put the game away. Shroyer finished with 14 saves for the Falcons.

Game 2: Air Force 13, Redlands 7
Air Force jumped out to an 8-1 lead at halftime and never trailed as they defeated Redlands 13-7 in game two at Loyola Marymount University. Eric Baber, Micah Peterson and Kirk Reimer all earned hat-tricks for the Falcons in the win.

With the game tied at 1-1 after Redlands earned a goal from Grant Culton on the extra-man attack, Air Force would score seven unanswered to pull away. Goalie Brandon Shroyer was again solid for the Falcons with 12 saves. Redlands was paced by TJ Harvey with four goals, including three in the third.

Game 3: Loyola Marymount 10, Redlands 2
The Lions used tough defense to earn their 15th win of the season. Senior Kevin Witt scored the first two goals of the game to give LMU a quick 2-0 lead, one they would not let go of. Witt finished the game with a hat-trick, giving him five goals on the day and 32 for the season. Junior Ryan Chapatte added two more goals against Redlands, his sixth and seventh goals of the day. He leads the team with 43 goals in 2002.

LMU held a 7-2 lead at halftime and senior Kevin Paulsen earned another win in goal for the Lions. He had a pair of saves in one half of work.
